An original student membership card for the Jun Fan Gung Fu Institute signed by Bruce Lee
An original 3½” x 2½” student membership card for the Jun Fan Gung Fu Institute. Signed by Bruce Lee (1940-1973) as President. The card was probably filled out by Taky Kimura, the head instructor at the Institute to show how to fill out the card for a new member where the membership number would be written (“0000”), Sex (“M”), Rank (“1”), Year (“67”), Qtr (“1”) indicating Summer, and Branch (“Wash”) meaning Seattle, Washington. On the Signature line “Student name” is penned; on the Instructor line is “Your Name.” Next to Card Expires is the date “Sept 27 – 1967.”
Lee began teaching martial arts in 1959. He called his style Jun Fan Gung Fu which translates to Bruce Lee’s Kung Fu. His first Jun Fan Gung Fu school was in Seattle.
The card features Lee’s Jeet Kune Do logo which incorporates the ying/yang symbol with his motto “Using no way as way, having no limitation as limitation” in Chinese.
Kimura was 36 first met Lee in Seattle in 1959. At that time, Lee was only 18 years old. Kimura eventually became head instructor of the Jun Fan Gung Fu Institute in Seattle which opened in 1963. After Lee moved to California in 1964, he would sign the cards and send them to Kimura to fill out and give to members. Kimura was the best man at Linda and Bruce Lee’s wedding in 1964. He was also a pallbearer at Lee’s funeral in 1973.
