Lot 164 - Mother of God Icon
A reduced size museum quality replica of the icon “Mother of God” painted by Theophanes the Greek (c. 1405) measuring 26” x 13½”.
Part of a limited edition of 375 numbered (Arabic) icons to be offered to collectors and 24 numbered (Roman) to be placed in Russia. The original icon is featured in the famous icon screen of the Cathedral of the Annunciation within the ensemble known as the Museums of the Kremlin, Moscow, by whom the replica is licensed.
The replica has been prepared using acid free archival paper and is mounted on a stable wood base. It has been hand-gilded in 22 karat gold and hand finished by a master icon painter.
Theophanes the Greek was a master Byzantine icon painter. He was commissioned to paint many of the icons in the original Cathedral of the Annunciation in Moscow, Russia. The icon carries the seal of the Cathedral of the Annunciation.
