A Penn National golf cap and scorecard, both signed by President Bill Clinton

An adjustable white wool Penn National golf cap signed Bill Clinton on the bill in black felt-tip. A label inside the cap reads “Derby Cap, Louisville, KY. U.S.A. Designed for Fit and Feel”. The cap shows slight wear.

The cap is accompanied by a Penn National Golf Club & Inn Scorecard kept by David Beegle signed “David Beegle” as scorer and “Bill Clinton” as President in black felt tip. Measures 12” x 5” when opened with a view of the par 72 court with the scores on for the final nine holes on the verso: Dave shot a 72, Dennis 76, Webb 79 and Mr President 87. Clinton shot par on 4 holes, bogeyed 13 holes and double bogeyed the 18th hole.

Also included in the lot is a typed one page letter measuring 6¾” x 9”, signed “Bill Clinton”. The letter is written on pale green White House stationary which is blind embossed with the presidential seal in the top centre. Addressed “Washington, July 27, 1994. To David B. Beegle, Penn National Gold Club and Inn, 3720 Clubhouse Drive, Fayetteville, Pennsylvania 17222”. It reads, in full:

“Dear Dave: Thanks for hosting me recently for a round of golf. I enjoyed meeting you and having a chance to visit. I am enclosing some golf balls for you, which I hope you will use in good health.”

The golf balls are not present in this lot. The letter, although never folded, is creased mostly in the upper portion, undoubtedly from the golf balls but is otherwise in fine condition.

Also included is a 10” x 8” Official White House photograph showing Bill Clinton shaking hands with Dennis Zimmerman, while Beegle and Webb Hubbell (partially hidden) look on; a Gettysburg newspaper article from July 4 1994 showing Clinton at Penn National; a newspaper article from December 1 1997 showing Clinton at Penn National on November 29th; a four-page 8½” x 11” illustrated Philadephia PGA booklet reporting the round of golf; a rare Camp David Season’s Greetings card, which measures 6¼” x 6¼” when closed and signed, in unknown hand, “From all of us at Camp”; a 1995 Seasons Greetings card, which measures 7¼” x 6” when closed, bearing facsimile “Bill Clinton” and “Hillary Rodham Clinton” signatures.

On July 2, 1994, President Clinton played a round of golf at the Penn National Golf Club, Fayetteville, PA. The club is about a 45 minute drive from the presidential retreat at Camp David in Maryland where Clinton was spending the Independence Day weekend. President Clinton, his recently resigned Associate Attorney General Webster Hubbell, White Rock Inc President and owner of the course Dennis Zimmerman and the club head pro Dave Beegle were all present.

Just four months later Hubbell pleaded guilty to federal mail fraud and tax evasion charges involving the Rose Law firm of which he and Hilary Clinton were partners. He served 16 months in prison.
